About Wenceslas SquareWenceslas Square (Václavské námestí) is the commercial and cultural center of New Town in Prague (Nové Mesto). The square is also one of the main tourist landmarks of the city, and a traditional site for locals to express their political opinions. During the Middle Ages, the place served as a horse market, and it was named after Saint Wenceslas, who was the patron saint of Bohemia, in 1848. Wenceslas Square is 750 meters long and 60 meters wide, resembling more of a rectangle than a square. This is the reason why it is sometimes referred to as a Boulevard instead. Most of the buildings that line it today are from the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are decorated with artworks of famous Czech artists. You can enter the restaurants, shops, clubs and cinemas through the fancy gates of the arcades. The main sights of the square are the National Museum (Národní muzeum) and the St. Wenceslas Monument - a bronze equestrian statue. Public Transportation Metro line A and C have a station at the National Museum (station Muzeum), and metro lines A and B have a station at the other end of the square (station Mustek). This latter station is actually two stations combined with a system of corridors. Sample Pictures of Wenceslas Square
