Wenceslas Square is located in the quarter called New Town, which was founded in 1348 by Charles IV. This quarter was established around 3 large markets. Later mainly craftsmen, smiths, brewers, wheelers and tradesmen settled down in this area, which is two times larger than the Old Town. In the 19th century a part of the New Town was dismantled and reconstructedThe most important sight of this quarter is the 750 m long and 60 m wide Wenceslas Square the political and commercial artery of Prague. Most of the buildings that line it today are from the 19th and 20th century. The buildings are decorated with artworks of famous Czech artists. You can enter restaurants, shops, clubs and cinemas through the fancy gates of the arcades. The National Museum and the St. Wenceslas Monument - a bronze equestrian statue - are the main sights of the square. You can also find the following sights here: Hotel Europe: Hotel Europe is one of the most valuable architectural landmarks of Prague. Its unique interior has appeared in many films of various world productions, such as "Mission Impossible" with Tom Cruise. Its Café Evropa and The Art Nouveau restaurant called "Titanic restaurant" are world-famous. The Church of the Virgin Mary of the Snow: The church was founded by Charles IV in 1347 in his remembrance of his coronation. The building has never been finished. The high altar, the saint portrait and the crucifix are baroque style. State Opera: The State Opera has been operating since 1945. You can see the figures of Thalia and Dionysos above the entrance decorated by columns. The interior of the building is ornamented with stuccos, the auditorium and the hall is decorated with original paintings. | ||||||||||
