One of the most beautiful architectural monuments of Prague is the Old Town Hall which is located in Old Town district in the heart of the city. The district was entitled with town rights in the 13th century, the Town Hall was built in 1338. Its construction was permitted by king John Luxemburg with the goal the Old Town would have an own council. Its 69,5 m high tower was built in 1364, on the private house of Wolfin Kamene, opening a wonderful panorama onto the city. The astronomical clock Orloj was constructed on it in 1440, finally its Northern wing was constructed between 1838 and 1848 in neo-gothic style. This part was pulled down due to the fire in the time of the uprising in Prague in 1945, but it was reconstructed carefully in gothic and renaissance styles. Unfortunately a part of the famous Prague archive could not be saved from the fire.

The block of the Town Hall has been composed from four patricians' house during the centuries, the last house was purchased to it in 1830. Among the several attached buildings the most significant is the renaissance building named To The Minute with 17th century sgraffitos on its front, and the gothic gate carved by Matthias Rejsek which served as the main gate.

A specialty of the Town Hall is that the leader of the poor in Prague, the reformer colleague of John Hus was executed in its court in 1422, and king George Podiebrad was elected to king here. On the front near the main gate we can see the statue of Hussite aristocrat Jan Rohác Dubái who was executed in 1437. Walking on, above the inscription "Prague, catipat of the kingdom" we see the shield of the Old Town which has been used as the shield of Prague since 1784.

In the entrance hall covered by mosaic we book tickets to visit the ceremonial halls. The most interesting part of the building is the second floor with the gothic Old Council Hall built in 1470 and with a statue portraying Jesus Christ. In the council hall we can see an engraving from the 19th century on which we can make out the ceiling made in the 15th century and has remained in good conditions; and we can see two historical paintings of V. Brozik: John Hus before the convocation in Konstanz and the election of George Podiebrad to king.
