CarlsbadKarlovy Vary (Carlsbad) is the largest and best-known bath resort in the Czech Republic, and it lies at the confluence of the Teplá River and the Ohře River. The distance between Carlsbad and Prague is 125 km. The town is located not far from the Czech-German border, along road E48, 60 km from the border town of Schirnding. The town owes its fame to the hot curative springs in the meadows by River Teplá. The temperature of the water is approximately 73 C.

History
The first spa in Karlovy Vary was founded by Charles IV in the 14th century. By the 16th century, there were lots of spa facilities and many aristocratic residences. Only a few buildings have been preserved from these times, due to a series of natural disasters. Most of the famous current monuments were built during the 18th and the 19th centuries.

Monuments
In the 19th century, J. Zítka had built one of the best-known and most visited spa building, the Mlynská (mill) Collonade. This building is 132 meters long and has five springs. Architect Zítka originally wanted to build a new Renaissance building, but its final look was substantially different. Karlovy Vary has many more attractive landmarks. For example, the Baroque Church of St. Mary Magdalene, which has the two-towered facade made by K.I. Dientzenhofer. Orthodox Church of St. Peter and Paul is also remarkable, built in the 19th century in the replica of a Byzantine church. The symbol of the town is the statue of the Chamois. In Karlovy Vary, further famous historical buildings are the Chateau Gate, the Post Office Manor House, the National House (1901), the Metropolitan Theatre (1886), the Market Place (1913) and the Art Gallery.

For as long as people can remember, special drinking cups have been used to drink Karlovy Vary water. These were and remain the property of each spa guest. Many drinking cups have been preserved as historical proof documenting the evolution of the spa treatment.

World Famous People from Carlbad
Many distinguished names are associated with the town, such as: Venceslaus Payer  author of the first balneological treatise on Carlsbad), D. Becher (physician), H. Mattoni (made Mattoni Mineral Water famous) and J.G. Pupp (founded herbal liqueur Becherovka). Carlsbad is famous for its specailities. Speaking of specialties, we mean in particular certain products to be used. Moser glass, named after the founder of the famous glass factory and known as "Glass of Kings" all around the world, ranks among these traditional specialties; this glass used to be a decoration and pride for rulers and celebrities in many countries all around the world. It is a synonym for a top craft and artistic level. Bitter-sweet bitters Karlovarská Becherovka (38% alcohol, 10% sugar), known as "the thirteenth spring", is one of the traditional and without doubt the most original specialty of Carlsbad.

Culture of Karlovy Vary
Every year the town hosts unforgettable cultural and sport events. Locals and tourists love these world class events. One of the most popular social events is the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. During the festival, lots of cinematography fans come here from all over the world. And also recently, Carlsbad is a prime place for film shooting. (For example, one of the latest James Bond movie was shot here.)

Sports of Carlsbad
Sport fans also love this place. A horse race track was built at the end of the 19th century, and also the first golf course of the Czech Republic was opened here in 1904. In 1905, six tennis courts were built in the town. Carlsbad offers lots of sport activities for both the locals and for visiting tourists.

Transportation in Carlsbad
Traveling to Carlsbad is easy by car, bus or train. You can also find a smaller airport in Karlovy Vary that receives charter and domestic flights, and it is situated approximately 10 kilometers from the town center. Public transportation buses have an extensive network in the city. All the buses leave from Tržnice (Market Place) in the center of Karlovy Vary. The public transportation company operates 18 regular lines, 2 night lines, 5 special lines and 2 cable cars.
